“There are no rules. This is how art is born, how breakthroughs happen. Go against the rules or ignore the rules. That is what invention about.”

Artist Statement

Marie Wolfe

‘Hands are a deeper intelligence of the heart’. Working from a felt sense of place I use my intuition and my hands as an expression or extension of the wisdom I store.

The poetry of nature emerges as the greatest artist. She is my role model and orientation. My work originates from my interface with the beauty of Orcas Island as well as with humanity. Travels are echoed in the painted surfaces where the human experience and beauty in all its perfection and imperfection is reflected. Through my physical and emotional confluence with nature I am able to bring parts of myself to my art.

I see my art as a form of communication, one that is not fully explained, leaving the viewer to draw meaning.

My work explores the simple accents, texture, color and feel of my surroundings, often overlooked, yet rich in character. I am fascinated with the vibrancy of life in the world around me and this is demonstrated by my intersection with the canvas in a given moment. The oil and cold wax lends itself to becoming complex in texture, yet meditative in composition. I am able to create a visual language through the use of different tools to create my own visual language whether in acrylic/mixed media or oil and cold wax. I love vacillating fluidly between mediums, whether it be painting, ceramics, sculpture, glass, or paper.
